As a university student it has reminded me once again what it was like to be in school. Those feelings of being timid and afraid to answer have all flashed back. It’s important as a teacher to make your students feel comfortable, but at the same time they have to know who’s in charge.
Students will be interested in excursions; I remember when I was in grade 5 we went on this great three day camping trip to Sovereign Hill. Here we got to learn about The Australian Gold Rush and dress up in old fashioned clothes; it was a great way to learn because we really got to experience what life was like during that era. Other areas that might interest them might include topics such as Immigration and multiculturalism, where I as a teacher can talk about my own experience. With learning areas like this students love events such multicultural day, where they get to taste food from each other’s countries and dress up in native costumes.
Students will be taught about the past, present and future and with the help of technology and books this can be researched easily. Other knowledge they will be taught include history, economics, civics and citizenship and geography. All of these areas have to be covered as they are stated under the national curriculum and found on the Aus Vels website that parents can use as reference to see if their child’s teacher is teaching what’s required.
It’s important to keep students engaged while learning because if not they have no motivation to keep learning. If all you gave students was textbooks and worksheets, then they would get bored easily. Using technology is a great way to keep students entertained and it’s something they enjoy because they know how to use it and can relate to it. Most books can be now easily accessed over the internet as E-books and if you have an interactive whiteboard it’s a great tool to use, so students can read along. Movies and documentaries are great for learning to, because students get to visualise the information they are learning.
Pair work and group work is a great way to engage students, as most students enjoy working with others. As a teacher though it’s important to keep an eye on your students and make sure they are doing the work needed and not just sitting around talking. Students should also be divided into groups that are not just their friendship circle because this could lead to distractions. As a teacher you will know your students enough to know who they work well with and who they don’t.
When I was younger teachers always used to tell me that they had heard from previous teachers of mine that I was a bit of a chatter box, this always used to annoy me because it meant that I had no chance of starting fresh with my new teachers. As a teacher I don’t think it’s a bad idea to communicate with other teachers, and to get tips for students you have trouble with, but I do think it’s a bad idea to voice these opinions out loud to your students. This makes your students feel uncomfortable and feel as if you’re judging them.
